Waltz into the Waves Page 3

I looked up into his eyes. I wanted to believe, but I knew it was too good to be true. “But what about my scars?”

“You mean this one?” He shifted and, for a moment, I thought he was going to drop me. The next moment, his warm lips kissed my marred temple. “And this one?” He kissed my cheek. “And this one?” He kissed my chin.

My heart pounded against my chest, and all rational thoughts escaped me. I threw my arms around his neck and buried my face in his neck, sobbing.

“I love you, Alex,” I whispered.

He laughed. Not a mocking one, but one that came from a heart that was overflowing with joy. He spun me around and around until I was dizzy and laughing with him. When he finally set me down on the dry sand, we both collapsed on the ground. I rested my head on his chest. We lay there for some time, content to watch the clouds and listen to the waves.

“I wanted to come for you sooner,” he whispered, his thumb stroking my marred cheek. “But my father was ill, and… something always seemed to get in the way. If I had known how your step-mother was treating you…”

I rolled over and placed a finger to his lips. “We are together now, and that is all that matters. How I have missed you since the day we waltzed on the beach.”

He sprang to his feet and pulled me to mine. “I have dreamt of dancing with you on the beach once again. Let us waltz once again before we leave.”

“Leave? Where are we going?” I asked as he put his arm around me.

He rested his forehead against mine. “I’m taking you back with me, my bride. We will be married as soon as possible. I promise you, we will come to the beach every summer and have at least one waltz in the waves.”

“Good,” I whispered as we started the dance. I closed my eyes, drinking in his nearness. “Because it really isn’t summer without you and the waves.”

I don’t know how long we waltzed in tune with the ocean, but it didn’t really matter. Love and ocean sounds were all we needed.
